The Sad Cake

I hope everyone had an excellent thanksgiving. We had fun hosting this year.  As hostess I really enjoyed all the flowers my guests bestowed upon me and it added lovely decoration to the feast.
Most of the food both brought by guests and made here was really fantastic. My sister in law brought baked pineapple that was to die for, the turkey was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and we even had home-made whipped cream for the pumpkin pie.

Unfortunately there was this cake, the same cake that is always brought to these gatherings. The one we used to smile and swallow a few bites of before setting it aside claiming to be too- full for another bite.  It is a made-from-a-box,  cooked until dry, and covered in pecans, apples or whatever else it is that your friends and family don’t eat.  It is made with love, but too damn hard to swallow. Everyone feels bad about not eating it, but at this point it has made too many appearances to just be eaten for the sake of being polite.

We tried to send it home with the baker, we even tried to pawn some off on the other guests, but when all was said and done we were left with a barely-touched cake, and knowing it would not be eaten by anyone in our home- even the children- we disposed of it.
