A Conversation With Penny (age 2)

Me: Good Morning (excited, and as if I am talking to a two year old)
Penny: Good morning (poorly enunciated and hard to understand like everything most two year olds say)
Me: How are you feeling today
Penny: Feel good
Me: How Does your tummy Feel? (she had been up sick)
Penny: (pointing to tummy) Right here.
Me: But how does it feel?
Penny: Feels ok.
Me: How does your foot feel
Penny: (wiggling toes) Feels cute
Me: How does your face feel?
Penny: (while stroking her face) feels preeeetyyyyy
Me: How does your hair feel?
Penny: (as she combed her hair with her fingers) Feels long!
Me: How do your eyes feel?
Penny: (squinting) feel blue
Me: And how does your sister feel?
Penny: (long Pause)
Me: What do you think, how does Autumn feel?
Penny: Red.

NEW in Caustic Threads

A friend that helps me out with my shop tasks likes bears. I'd been wanting to do a bear design for a while, but I was inspired and motivated to do it when she mentioned it in conversation. I love how it turned out. This photo is just a preview, the item will be available later this week.

I also finally started offering polo shirts in Caustic Threads. I have been making these for my husband since he can't wear t-shirts at work, and he gets frequent compliments on the screen-printed  polo tees he wears to work. This can be ordered now at causticthreads.com

So, What is next? Well, spring is right around the corner. I may cuddle with my little ones and that frog and toad story to see if I can conjure some inspiration.

After Much Anticipation...

They're HERE!

My dolls arrived Monday morning, and I am super excited. They are really very high quality. I was unsure what to expect since they were "factory" dolls and I had never seen one in person before. I am especially impressed with their hair. It is silky soft and thick.

I ordered really cute clothes, and hope to make more. I also ordered some face-plates so I can customize them.

Adam made me a box with a Plexi-glass front to hopefully protect them from the kids. I want to make some 1:6 scale furniture to make a diorama.

Some of this, and some of that.

I find myself dreaming of spring while I work close to my space heater. This treasury is inspired by spring days and daydreams.

We filed our first ever paypal claim recently. As an online seller, I never expected to have to file a claim with paypal. Unfortunately, we ordered something from a large website that was not what we expected. We thought we were purchasing a magazine subscription and a few back issues of Vogues Collections. It turns out that we were purchasing a digital copy. After going back and re-reading the information I decided to file a claim because the item did not state anywhere that it was a digital copy. Today Paypal sided in our favor, and after feeling so taken advantage of, it really feels like a victory.

I recently did some new artwork that I will be printing on shirts soon:

The customer that requested the design chose the first image, but I like them both, so I will be turning both into screens.

And of course, I have been tracking the progress of my Blythe Dolls very closely. It looks like they will arrive Saturday, but maybe Monday.  I will post pictures when she arrives.

Take care!

Coming Soon, to Caustic Threads

Late in 2013 I purchased a sublimation printer and a multi-press to create lots of awesome things.

I will now be able to sublimate shirts which will allow me to do  more with full color art. In addition to shirts I can sublimate my images on to a variety of sizes of mugs, hats, and plates. I am hoping to go to a thrift store soon to pick up some mismatched china to do some limited edition, special porcelain plates. I will share a photo when I get that far.

I also have a second regular press, which makes heat pressing and shipping orders MUCH more efficient.

I did break down and buy my Blythe doll. I was not ready to spend the money for one directly from Takara, so I bought two "factory dolls". From what I can surmise , they seem to be made up of leftover parts and slightly imperfect.  They had more options available and the dolls were more unique, so I really liked that about the two I ended up with.

I also finally got Adam's etsy shop up and running before the end of last year and I have been really impressed with how well things are selling over there. He does beautiful work but I was not really expecting his items to get noticed right away. He loves it because he gets to make and sell the items and I do all of the shipping and listing for him.

See you next week !

Falling For Blythe.

I have seen Blythe dolls around for quite some time and been vaguely amused but unsure where one can buy one. Recently my interest has been rejuvenated.

I have always loved dolls, and honestly, never really outgrew them. I am lucky enough to have two super cute daughters to share my obsession with... but Blythe dolls are expensive and if I choose to collect them I will need to also keep my 2 and 5 year old children away.

Blythe dolls were originally by Kenner and Released in the United States. They were not very popular and were only produced during 1972. In 2001 She was revived. Blythe is licensed by Takara now.

More information on Blythe can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blythe_(doll)

I have found that I can purchase one on ebay, a custom one on etsy,  or directly from Takara. Now for the hard part... choosing one...

The Sad Cake

I hope everyone had an excellent thanksgiving. We had fun hosting this year.  As hostess I really enjoyed all the flowers my guests bestowed upon me and it added lovely decoration to the feast.
Most of the food both brought by guests and made here was really fantastic. My sister in law brought baked pineapple that was to die for, the turkey was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and we even had home-made whipped cream for the pumpkin pie.

Unfortunately there was this cake, the same cake that is always brought to these gatherings. The one we used to smile and swallow a few bites of before setting it aside claiming to be too- full for another bite.  It is a made-from-a-box,  cooked until dry, and covered in pecans, apples or whatever else it is that your friends and family don’t eat.  It is made with love, but too damn hard to swallow. Everyone feels bad about not eating it, but at this point it has made too many appearances to just be eaten for the sake of being polite.

We tried to send it home with the baker, we even tried to pawn some off on the other guests, but when all was said and done we were left with a barely-touched cake, and knowing it would not be eaten by anyone in our home- even the children- we disposed of it.

Lately I have not had enough time to gather my thoughts, much less my emotions. There was a time that I felt pretty introspective, but now if given a moment of free time alone I am not really sure what to do with myself.

Friday Feature: Samantha, from Gilded Rose Studio

This week I am very delighted to be able to share the work of another Rollergirl! It is also very interesting how similar we are. We both do some tattoo inspired work, both are mommies, both play roller derby, and both love to juxtapose contrasting ideas and themes.

I have placed an order with Samantha, I am very excited about it! Please visit her store: Gilded Rose Studio

Tell me about your store.

Well! I had started out designing Roller Derby-themed Onesies...with clever baby-related Derby Names. Created the Old School way...with stencil and fabric paint. I still think the names are great, but I was not entirely happy with the finished product. So, I can see why they never sold. I don't consider it a complete failure...it opened me up to other ideas. Traditional Tattoos on babies! So complete polar opposites, but totally cute-able when you add hand-embroidery. And I didn't even know how to embroider. Go figure :)

How would you describe your style?

I used to have oodles of style. Coming out of the seams...that's how much style I had! Now I have a baby. I don't feel I need to elaborate any further. In my mind, reminiscing on my "old life", it was a mix of preppy, classic and envelope-pushing. Back in the day when I worked in corporate finance, I would wear all sorts of interesting outfits. A knit royal purple printed shift dress with knee high brown heeled boots, complete with my favorite Forever 21 junk jewelry. I loved mixing up the expensive stuff with the cheap stuff. (but you had to be selective when it came to the cheap stuff otherwise it doesn't work!) One of my favorite flirty outfits was this black and white mini polka dot cap-sleeve dress, sheer button up over a slip from H&M, black leather vintage-style Coach shoes with teardrop cut-outs over the toes (the only kind of Coach anything I will wear) and bright red lipstick. I'm constantly inspired by pin-ups. I don't try to dress like an exact replica of them, but I will channel their style (if I can!) ::sigh:: Those were the days.
Samantha and Her Daughter

 What inspires you?
It may not be blatantly obvious in my creations, but my surroundings in the mountains inspire me a great deal. They remind me to keep things simple, use pops of color when it calls for it. Not to over-embellish. I suppose that might be how one would describe traditional tattooing. I love contrast, the use of opposites. I use backdrops highlighting my natural surroundings in my pictures. My newest favorite backdrop is the meticulous way my husband stacked one of our woodpiles for winter.

Summer Mountain View

Do you sell in other venues?
Yes! I have a collection featured at Mother & Child in Nashua, NH as well as a collection at Live Wire in Westerly, RI. I'm working on my website right now, it will be a process! I'm currently gearing up for Fall Craft Fairs in the New England region.

What networking do you do that you feel helps your business?
Person-to-person and word of mouth will always trump anything online. But promoting on Facebook, no matter how annoying it must seem to my friends and family because the only updates they see from me are pictures of embroidered baby onesies, seems to draw in a good deal of views and word of mouth sales. I discovered the Business Forums about 2-3 weeks ago...as slimy as it sounds, showing my face on that forum (not even for selfish reasons!) appears to be working for me as well.

-Just a side note, I found Samantha's shop in the forums :)  -

Share one random fact about yourself… or more if you wish.
I like tuna fish sandwiches. But I cannot eat chicken salad, even though they are the same consistency. Speaking of food...sometimes, when I'm standing up and snacking, I will do a little happy-dance-kick a la "A Chorus Line".

What is your workspace like?
It is CRAZY! I had taken over my husband's drawing table because he wasn't using it, but I have recently been kicked off the drawing table because (I feel) my husband doesn't want to share. I now operate out of my handy storage container and embroider wherever it's comfortable. I also will embroider standing up on occasion...I sit far too much than I would like to admit due to creating for my store! I'm still thinking of a better "home" for my little operation.
Winter Sunset

Thanks to Samantha for letting me do a feature on her store and sharing awesome photos! please visit her shop!

Have a great Weekend!
